Consider for a moment that the nation has 6,500 communities designated as food deserts and that 1,441 of those, or 22 percent, are located in eight Southeastern states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee.
