Ms. Byrd-Giles' professional experience includes cultural competence training and consulting to healthcare organizations. She has been recognized on both local and international levels, including her appointment as co-chair of the Martin Luther King Conflict Resolution Conference Malawi in Southern Africa that is sponsored by the Fulbright Foundation, University of Malawi, Miles College, and Diversity University. She also was honored by the Greater Birmingham United Nations Association for founding Diversity University in 1995. This cross-cultural program involves six colleges and universities.

Ms. Byrd-Giles has focused on the workforce development of students and professionals over the past 19 years. She served as an administrator and part-time instructor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. During her career in student affairs, she was involved on a regional level with the National Association of Campus Activities. As a consultant to the Children’s Defense Fund’s Southern Rural Black Woman’s Initiative (SRBWI), she facilitated listening sessions in three states and participated in an exchange between SRBWI and women’s organizations in India.

Ms. Byrd-Giles holds certificates in intercultural communication from the Intercultural Communication Institute. She completed graduate studies in education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and undergraduate studies in international relations from the University of Virginia.
